We don’t launch new products very often here at Orca, so we’re pretty excited to announce our new Drift Detector product. This product launch thrills me for two reasons: 1) users now have a new and easier way to get their hands on Orca, and 2) this product focuses solely on the “big three” missing in other configuration management tools – drift detection visibility, application-centric perspective, and “download and go” usability.

If you’re already familiar with Orca, I should start by saying this drift detection capability is already included in our do-everything Orcastrator platform, but we’ve had many requests to offer this as a standalone product. In my conversations with IT teams, a need for configuration visibility continues to come up as the number one need. Full automation is great, but many teams are still trying to bring order to their Production chaos and just need some visibility… and fast. They need to answer the question “does the middleware configuration on this server differ from the configuration on that server?” “Why did my deployment pass in UAT but fail in Production – how are the configurations different?” “I have twenty servers in this web farm, which one doesn’t look like the others?”

Most tools they try to use are “make it so” tools, forcing them into full automation to make their infrastructure stack look exactly as it should. They don’t know where to start, and often they spend a lot of time just trying to get the ball rolling and trying to write a bunch of scripts, never achieving any of the configuration visibility they actually need or being able to answer what should be simple questions. Also, most of these tools are very server and OS focused and don’t provide much built-in configuration management for the full application stack, which is arguably more important than the OS itself!

Enter Drift Detector.

Your first few hours with Drift Detector will be a blast. It’s incredibly easy to set up application ecosystems that will monitor infrastructure configurations for the full stack – including your applications, middleware, database, and OS. Orca performs automated configuration inventories that return all your configuration data, present it to you in a web-based user interface, and analyze it for the following issues:

  1. drift from a baseline
  2. differences between “like” servers
  3. out-of-compliance based on your policy

This ensures application performance, availability, and security. You’ll have near instant visibility so you can easily answer all the questions you struggled with before. Also, because we’re application-centric we have a bunch of out-of-the-box integrations for middleware, database, and more so you don’t have to spend all your time writing and maintaining scripts (unless you want to import your own scripts, which you can do if you really want to).

Lastly, as I mentioned above we also decided to make this a “download and go” product, in order to make it as easy as possible to try, buy, and get value from. You can download the free 30-day trial here and after your trial period is up all you need to do is purchase a license key and you’re done. The great thing is that if you decide later you want the full Orcastrator platform (including automated remediation and more), it’s a simple license key upgrade, not a new product install!
